Storyline:
Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) keep on their dangerous way to Mordor being accompanied by treacherous Gollum (voice of Andy Serkis) who is being torn between his evil and good identities. He still craves for the Ring he call his Precious. Meantime, Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) are hostages of Uruk-hai while Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) are trying to release them. The power of Isengard grows, armies of many thousands orcs are marching on towards the lands of Gondor and Rohan, and the burning baleful Eye stares from the awful tower of Barad-Dur. The Ent nation rises when the orcs begin to cut down the ancient forest of them by Saruman’s order. The might of the innumerable Mordor powers headed by Sauron looms over the Middlearth, the land became silent before the great war.

Yes, it’s true. Return of the King may have won more of the Oscars as the culmination of Peter Jackson’s magnificent cinematic achievement, but history will in fact adjudge “The Two Towers” as the greatest of the three Rings. If Fellowship was a road movie and ROTK was a friendship film, then Two Towers is an unadulterated war movie of heroic proportions. Peter Jackson said he based it on “Zulu”- and we can see why. It has a dramatic intensity and flow which none of the other films quite share. Good against evil are so sharply contrasted that you could cut your fingers on them. TTT also has the best score Howard Shore has produced. And it has the best dialogue.

The screenplay explains (with barely disguised contemporary resonance) what we are protecting in Western civilisation when we defend ourselves against those who would wish to destroy it. When Sam tells Frodo that there are “some things worth fighting for”, when Merry tells Pippin that there “won’t be a Shire” unless they do something about it, when King Theoden laments that “the sun has gone down in the West” this film could be entitled not the “Two Towers” but “the Twin Towers”. It is Miltonic in its scope. It is cinema as art.

Yes, one may quibble about certain Entish details, and I know that the Elves weren’t supposed to be at Helm’s Deem, and that Faramir is a little undeveloped, but does this matter? Not at all. The Extended version is better than the original, but does not need to make such a quantum leap as Fellowship managed with its EE. However it will be a film that is seen as a landmark in cinema. A trilogy which may never be bettered. And a reminder of what we are all here for.

Storyline:
In the final chapter of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic trilogy, the Dark Lord Sauron (Sala Baker) assigns his infinite hosts to besiege Minas Tirith, the capital of Gondor. Obviously, I’m aware of the fact that the Lord of the Rings trilogy is actually one giant movie, but since it was released in parts, that’s how I’m judging them. The Return Of The King is the final chapter, and since it is the climax and resolution of the epic journey, it has a little more intensity and urgency than the previous installments.
At this point everyone has come to know and love all of the characters, and the stakes have become tremendously high. Kingdoms are at their knees, and the only two characters who can save the day are getting weaker and weaker. The tension was very high in this episode and I can honestly say that out of all 3 this was the only one that had me on the edge of my seat. There were many memorable scenes (one of my favourites including the part with the giant spider)that made this the classic that it is sure to stay for decades to come.
This is the longest of the series, mostly because of the ending that seems to last a while. This was a good ending, and I can see why Frodo did what he did. He, and us the audience, have gone through an incredible ordeal and I think we needed that 20 minute linger. When the battle is over, and the celebrations have ended, there is a sad emptiness felt. The films spanned over 3 years, there have been the extended cuts of course, but after that, it’s all over. Peter Jackson gave us an ending that was both appropriate and admirable.
These were some amazing movies and this one in particular is the best, in my opinion. As whole, the Lord Of The Rings is a phenomenon. An absolute phenomenon. Much more than just movies. They have a universal appeal and have touched the hearts and imaginations of millions. I’m one of them.
Sorry if I’m being all fanboyish and kissing this movie’s ass, but I really admire it. It may not be among my personal favourites but generally this seems to be the movie event of the century. There will never be another Lord of the Rings film, and that’s a bit depressing.

Storyline:

Transformers is a very mixed bag. There are great things about it and
there are some not-so-great things about it…

The good:

- The visual effects. Perhaps the best special effects I’ve ever seen in a
movie. The transformations are amazing not to mention super-awesome. The CGI
fits in seamlessly with the live action and it’s easy to forget how logistically
difficult a lot of it would have been to film.

- The sound design. The sound effects complement the action perfectly making
everything twice as exciting. Probably less acknowledged is the alien atmosphere
created by some of the score which heightens the tension very effectively and
probably without the majority of the audience noticing.

- Shia LeBeouf. Without him the movie wouldn’t be nearly as engaging. He has
natural comic timing and is probably second to none in expressing disbelief
of the "holy crap, there’s a giant alien robot transforming in front of
me" variety.

- The humour. Transformers is funnier than most good comedies which
I was not expecting in the least. The transformers themselves are often
funnier than they are impressive.

- The Decepticons. Man are they cool. The opening scene is particularly kick-arse.

The bad:

- Megan Fox. If hot means "can’t act and doesn’t weigh much" then
yes, she’s very hot. It’s not a good sign if you want one of the main characters
to die or at least get out of the way and stop trying to act. Her performance
just seemed very shallow and probably wasn’t helped by her dialogue.

- The script. Although the overall storyline is good, some of the dialogue
is terrible. Too much of the film is spent on mumbo jumbo technical explanations
the audience just doesn’t care about. The less serious parts of the script work
very well though.

- Michael Bay. Although some of the action scenes are very well put together
and the humorous parts are timed very well, Bay can’t help but ruin some of
the scenes with unnecessarily flashy editing and over the top drama accompanied
by none-too-subtle dramatic music. It’s not that Michael Bay’s style is too
loud, it’s that it’s too cliched.

- The music. Nothing new here (other than the alien sounding parts). Practically
rips of Batman Begins and is otherwise forgettable. The music should enhance
the film by bringing out interesting themes or emotions, not force feeding us
the drama we can plainly see on the screen in super slow motion.

The ugly:

- Megatron. He’s ugly. And super cool.

So, my verdict? The good outweighs the bad pretty comfortably. If you took
out the bad you might even have a classic on your hands. Instead you get revolutionary
action scenes and some great comedy with Michael Bay’s unique brand of mediocre
directing sprinkled throughout.

I saw this at a cast and crew screening in London last weekend: I’m not a huge Bond fan, but I do enjoy them on a purely popcorn level and this was definitely one of the best in recent memory. The tone is much edgier and nastier than the Brosnan movies, harking back more to Dr. No or For Your Eyes Only. The action sequences are brilliantly shot and edited for maximum impact and are some of the best out of any Bond movie. Martin Campbell, who also made ‘Goldeneye’, was an excellent choice and, for me, is one of the best Bond directors. What gives this the lead over recent Bonds is the more realistic feel: the exotic locales, fast cars, spectacular action, beautiful women and many other Bond hallmarks are all here but gone is the campy tone that marred, say, Die Another Day. Yes, the whole franchise is based on an entirely ridiculous and cartoonish notion but the more serious and harder-edged tone works really well here. In this context, Daniel Craig gives an excellent performance as Bond. I’ll be the first to admit that I raised an eyebrow when I heard he was cast but he really makes it his own. It’s hard to say whether he’s better than any of the other Bonds: Connery and Brosnan felt right for the style of Bond movies they were in. Here, as suits the overall tone of the film, Bond is much more of a sadist, a cold-hearted killer with very little sense of empathy and Craig, with his piercing eyes, suits the role very well. He’s charming and funny when required and totally convincing in the action sequences. The violence is less cartoon-like and flippant, too, with every punch, kick and shooting looking like they really hurt. Also, the story is just much more engaging than many a Bond film; the script’s not going to win awards but it’s consistently inventive and intriguing. Whilst the film has enough of it’s fair share of action, the emphasis is equally on character and storyline and less on gadgets and sheer implausibility. When there isn’t a huge action sequence happening, you don’t miss it: the film’s longest set-piece, the poker game at the Casino Royale, is as (or not more) gripping and entertaining than any of the chases and shoot-outs. The only minor gripes that I have are a slightly too long running time: the film drags a wee bit towards the end and, although it helps the tone of the film, we don’t hear enough of the Bond theme tune! However, great directing and performances from everyone involved, along with Phil Meheux’s excellent cinematography, Peter Lamont’s as ever superb production design and all the other top-notch craft and technical departments make ‘Casino Royale’ a classy and very enjoyable night out at the movies.

This was a recipe for disaster. A PG-13 rating, Justin Long, a 52 year old Bruce Willis, a plot about cyber-terrorism and an inexperienced director who had only done Matrix-like action films before. I was one of many who didn’t even remotely like the concept or the people working on the film. Apprehensive isn’t the word to use here, as the Die Hard fan base prepared for the absolute worst. So, does it work?

I’ll concede that the plot is a bit silly, but the villain played by Timothy Olyphant manages to be quite fearsome, and a worthy nemesis for our beloved McClane. The biggest fear for most fans prior to the release of this film was whether this would be a true Die Hard film. The trailers and the few released clips made it look very, very stylized, but rest assured that “Live Free or Die Hard” is probably the ‘hardest’ PG-13 anyone’s seen in a long time; it’s shocking how much violence they got away with here, and though McClane doesn’t swear nearly as much as in the previous installments he is no different here than he was in the last three films: a sarcastic, brutal anti-hero who really doesn’t want to be doing what he’s doing. Bruce Willis gives an energetic, astoundingly physical performance for a 52 year old man and pulls no punches with one wisecracking line after another. Surprisingly, Justin Long really isn’t at all as annoying as expected, and does a fairly good job.

Wiseman’s direction is the big surprise here, though. He succeeds against all odds, an MTV-generation, heavily stylistic director hired to helm a Die Hard film? It’s a ridiculous idea, but surprise, surprise, he creates the exact same attitude and feel of the last three films and plays it straight, no stylized, “Transporter”-like violence or stunts here. It’s about damn time we got some real (and damn good) stunt-work in a modern day action flick. The only bit that is obviously CGI is a scene involving a jet which admittedly does go on a bit too long, but it’s not a bad scene and doesn’t take away from the film’s quality. And to answer the question that is on everyone’s mind: yes, he does say it, in full. There is a gunshot but it only partially muffles the end. The score’s fairly good too, surprisingly, considering this is a Marco Beltrami score we’re talking about.

If you really are a Die Hard fan you don’t want to miss this on the big screen. One thing’s for sure, it kicks the hell out of “Die Hard 2″. Willis’ John McClane is one of the greatest action heroes of all time and this is no blemish on his record at all. Against all odds, “Live Free or Die Hard” is definitely a worthy addition to the series and without a doubt one of the best action films in many years. It’s a return to old-school action films and most certainly is no stylized action film ala “The Matrix” or even the Bourne series. This is a killer, old-school action film. Who would’ve thought?!

I don’t hand out ten star ratings easily. A movie really has to impress me, and The Bourne Ultimatum has gone far beyond that. Furthermore, this trilogy has come together so nicely, that I believe it to be one of the greatest motion picture trilogies of our time. Though all three films could not be any more different from the Ludlum novels, they still stand as a powerful landmark in cinematic achievement. The Bourne Ultimatum made me want to cry that the series was complete, yet I could not even attempt to stop smiling for hours.
From the moment that the opening title appeared, I knew we were in for a ride. Paul Greengrass has done it again. Everything we love from the previous Bourne films is here once again: the action, the dialogue, and of course the shaky camera. However for me, that last one was never a problem. I think it adds to the suspense.
I will be back to see this film several times before it is released on DVD, simply because it is genius. It is a perfectly satisfying conclusion, and should stand the test of time as a fantastic movie, and altogether, an unforgettable trilogy.
